We are pleased to announce that this year’s May Fresh Start Sale raised over $6,000!
This is an amazing accomplishment for our organization, and we can’t wait to use the funds to give back to our community.
The money raised will be used to purchase items our program participants need, and to fund our programming so we can continue to help combat homelessness in the Quad City area.
Our rummage sales began back in 1990 at the home of Gertrude Vogel. Her daughter, and HMHI’s Financial Director, Sister Mary Ann Vogel, said the first year, the sale raised $600. Each year the sale grew bigger and bigger. Gertrude would fill the garage, the driveway, and the front yard to the brim with items for sale.
Eventually, the sale outgrew Gertrude’s home, and it moved out to the Mississippi Valley Fairgrounds. In 2011, when HMHI moved into our new home on Mississippi Avenue in Davenport, we were able to begin hosting the sales in our warehouse.
Sister Mary Ann says this has been a huge success.
“We’re picking up more and more new people,” she said. “The word is spreading. The May sale is the best sale that we’ve had ever here in this building.”
HMHI is also working to expand our outreach by placing antique items for sale on eBay. This has been very successful so far, and with technology constantly changing, we hope this aspect of the sales will continue to expand.
“It’s good to see it grow,” Sister Mary Ann said. “We’re always needing volunteers to help us with it.”
So be sure to mark your calendars for the third weekend in October, Oct. 17 and 18, when we will hold our Fall Rummage Sale! We could use your time as a volunteer, your donations for the sale, or your purchases as a customer at the sale itself!
Thank you to everyone who helped us with our May Rummage Sale! Your time truly does help us to benefit our community.
