HMHI challenges supporters to match Kehl gift

Local governmental and business leaders joined Humility of Mary Housing to challenge supporters to match a major gift.  Bobby Kehl, of Kehl Management, has personally pledged to contribute $50,000 a year for Humility of Mary Housing for the coming five years, a total of $250,000. With Davenport Mayor Bill Gluba, Kehl joined Julie Bockenstedt, HMHI Executive Director, to call upon the public to match the Kehl donation over the coming five years.

Matching the Kehl Gift

HMHI hopes to inspire and challenge Quad City citizens and businesses to match the Kehl donation each year with new and increased donations.

“Donations from the community are incredibly important,” emphasized HMHI executive director Julie Bockenstedt.

“The grant funding is unpredictable now. It is also shrinking and so we depend on the community to help with the good work we are doing and helping people who are homeless quickly move into permanent housing.”

Coalition of Community Concern

Mayor Bill Gluba directly invited Kehl to consider the generous pledge by personally touring him through various agencies that assist people experiencing homelessness, hunger and poverty in Davenport, including HMHI. Bobby Kehl responded in keeping with the tradition of his family, citing the example of his parents Bob and Ruth who always made giving a top priority.

“Their legacy includes not only the partnerships they have with nonprofits across the state, but also the Kehl Diabetes Center of Unitypoint Health-Finley and the Robert & Ruth Kehl Center at Clarke University [of Dubuque, IA],” stated Kehl.

Kehl expressed his hopes for the success of the HMHI campaign:

Of course, one donation can only go so far. We’re excited about this challenge and the opportunity for you to do even more for the community. On behalf of my entire family, we wish you the best of luck in reaching your goal.

Responding to the Kehl Gift Challenge

Donations to the challenge can be made on this website, using the DONATE NOW button, or by check to HMHI’s office. Donation increases from current supporters and all donations from new supporters will count toward fulfilling the donation challenge.

Humility of Mary Housing, Inc. values its partnership with community leaders and members. By providing essential services to the most vulnerable in the Quad Cities, we build a stronger future. Your support makes that possible.

Jazz Brunch 2014 created delicious memories

Jazz Brunch 2014

Jazz Brunch 2014 delivered a beautiful event of food and music in a lovely environment and upheld the tradition of past years. Once again, the weather contributed to the occasion as sunshine spilled over the early autumn landscape, creating a beautiful panorama just outside the plate glass windows of the Crow Valley Golf Club banquet rooms.

HMHI’s Development Committee is grateful to all 2014 Jazz Brunch sponsors, attendees, and all who contributed to making this an event to remember. Enjoy the sights of the brunch in this gallery of images.

Each item for sale is individually inspected, screened and approved for sale, assuring you of quality products in every area. As in past years, the sale will include furniture, clothing for men, women, children and babies, household goods, craft items, china and glassware, jewelry, books and more.

There’s something for everyone, and our prices can’t be beat.

HMHI Benefit Sale

The Fall Sale features seasonal and holiday items as well as fall and winter clothing. All clothing is sized, sorted and neatly displayed, making shopping convenient and fast.

HMHI utilizes the proceeds from these semi-annual sales to fund programming for single-parent families who are homeless. The sale became a mainstay of funding for the agency early in our 25 year history. From it’s inception as an occasional garage sale, the semi-annual Fresh Start sale has expanded to an ongoing operation at our agency headquarters.

There’s plenty of parking in our lot and on the street for shoppers, and there’s lots of merchandise on the tables ready for sale. Mark your calendar. We look forward to seeing you at the fall sale.

Eight out of ten of our program participants remained in our Transitional and Permanent Supportive Housing programs a minimum of six months. We are pleased that 75% of all families exited our program to enter permanent housing.

HMHI participating familyBetween April 1, 2013 and March 31, 2014, we served 73 single parent families who were homeless, providing them with secure housing and supportive services and enabling them to regain housing stability.

With the help of our supporters, we will continue to improve the quality of life in our Quad Cities community.

How to Adopt an HMHI Family for Christmas

HMHI family at Christmas

Christmas, a time of giving, is a great time to assist a family experiencing homelessness, and HMHI is pleased to connect you with a family in need. You can provide gifts for a single-parent family or for an individual in our program.

An “Old Fashioned Christmas”

Our theme is “Old Fashioned Christmas,” from the Victorian suggestion that appropriate gifts consist of:

  • Something that you want,
  • Something that you need,
  • Something that you’ll wear,
  • Something that you’ll read.

Each of our participants select four wishes in keeping with this list.

How You Can Help

Contact us if you’d like to choose gifts to make our participants’ wishes come true.

Then drop off the new, unwrapped gifts (or gift cards) at our office no later than December 15. For more information, phone us at 563/326-1330, ext. 105.

Sarah Marie Young Ensemble again headlines New Orleans Jazz Brunch

http://youtu.be/m-dah-mJSfE

On the brink of releasing her second solo album in October, Sarah Marie Young‘s ensemble returns to HMHI’s New Orleans Jazz Brunch to entertain with their own special jazz stylings.

The new album, Little Candy Hearts, on SnipRecords, showcases Sarah Marie’s original writing–much of it about love. In the video at the top of this post Sarah discusses her creative processes and gives the listener a few snippets of her upcoming album.

Sarah Marie Young
Sarah Marie Young, seen here performing at the 2013 Jazz Brunch, has repeatedly delighted Quad Cities audiences.

Sarah Marie and her ensemble have been a staple of our jazz brunch from its inception. Each year we’re delighted to bring them back because their music is a hit with our brunch guests. This year Sarah Marie herself must attend a family event and will be unable to perform for us. However, the ensemble will feature another rising vocalist lending novelty and variety to the program.

Tickets are available on our website or at our office. Enjoy live music that supports single-parent families experiencing homelessness at the New Orleans Jazz Brunch, headlined by the Sarah Marie Young Ensemble on September 28.
