1 Very good reason we support two generations of Quad Cities citizens

You never know how the events in a child’s life will shape his future. Sister Mary Ann Vogel, one of the founders of HMHI, always states that we support two generations at once. While we are helping the parent, we are creating positive influence in the lives of the children.

A perfect example of this took place today in history; July 17, 1955 was the opening day of Disneyland, the brainchild of Walt Disney. He has brought joy to the world through his cartoons, movies and theme parks.

Walt is the son of Elias Disney, who was a construction worker for the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago, the first United States World’s Fair. Watching his father work on the creation of a wonderful city for the public may well have been the source of inspiration for the later creation of Disneyland. Author Erik Larson cites this as a source of inspiration for Walt in his book, Devil in the White City.

Elias was a farmer most of his life, but the growing depression spurred him into a new field, construction. Son Walt saw the imaginary city that was created for the World’s Fair and later created a dynasty far beyond the dreams of anyone to date.

We Support Two Generations

Who knows how we influence the next generation? We do know this. By helping keep families off the street and in homes, the children are in stable environments and have access to schools, activities and hopefully are free to discover all that life has for them. Will another great like Walt Disney one day say they can attribute their beginnings to their stay with HMHI? Who knows, but for now, we know that every day is a chance for greatness to spring forth.

A Reflection on Anne Frank, the Quad Cities and Homelessness

Today in history….Anne Frank and her family went into hiding. They lived for two years in a secret room inside a warehouse before being discovered and sent to concentration camps. Her diary was found two years after her death and published.

Anne and her family fled and hid to avoid the horrible events of life. Anne’s parents did what they could to protect those children. In the same way our participant parents are doing things to protect their children. In one case a mother reported that as she watched her children duck under the beds when shooting started in the street outside, she knew in that instance that she had to move, to get her children out of there.

When life around us can’t be controlled, powerful forces sometimes push us into unpleasant circumstances. At HMHI, we help catch families who are forced to flee and start over. We offer housing and support for families in crisis.

​It was late in World War II that America started to hear about the concentration camps; we didn’t know the horrors that existed for the victims of Hitler until it was too late for most. But communications keep us more informed now. We can all see that many are experiencing homeless around us. We can’t say that we don’t know.

Because we do know.

Homelessness actually affects all of us. It affects business, tourism, and it increases costs to the state that are passed on to taxpayers. But, most importantly, homelessness affects our spirit: individually as a city, as the Quad Cities, as a state and as a nation.

HMHI is here at work in the Quad Cities Area to help those in need. With your help every day we are able to house, clothe and feed these families in crisis. Each family has two years, not in a secret room, yet sheltered from the world, to rebuild their lives, to gain education and employment. Two years to regain their purpose and sense of self. With your help we are getting these families back on track, we rejoice when each family leaves us for we know our work is done.

As John Deere Classic time approaches, we’re participate once again in the tournament’s Birdies for Charity fundraising pledge program. Every penny of your Birdies for Charity pledge to Humility of Mary Housing will benefit our program to assist single-parent families who are working hard to escape homelessness. In addition, your contribution raises our total and qualifies HMHI to receive a larger second check from tournament profits.

Birdies for Charity makes donating enjoyable. By participating you’re eligible to win hundreds of prizes donated by the tournament sponsors. This year’s Grand Prize, for instance, is a two year lease on a 2015 Lexus NX. And, there are many others, like:

  • A John Deere Classic teemarker signed by the 2015 John Deere Classic champion

Summer Heat Creates Need for Families without Homes

Apartments can be uncomfortable in summer heat. We can use help keeping our families cooler.

Summer heat arrived, and that makes life less comfortable for the families HMHI serves. Our apartments don’t have central air conditioning. So, window fans and window air conditioners are a great assistance in the heat of the summer.

Used appliances that work well are as welcome as new ones. The size of the unit isn’t really an issue. As long as the appliance can plug into a regular electrical outlet, 110 volt.

Summer Heat, Special Need

HMHI provides nearly 50 apartments in Davenport to house families experiencing homelessness. Currently, they are all full. We’re serving over 100 children who would otherwise have nowhere to live.

Life is stressful for families without roots. Heat adds to that stress. Your donation of a window air conditioner or fan will alleviate problems and add comfort to lives that circumstances have been disrupted.

With your help, we will better serve the most vulnerable children in our metropolitan area.

Long-time volunteer and nonagenarian Gertrude Vogel’s devoted work for HMHI was recognized with a Quad City Caring Award by the Community Foundation of the Great River Bend in 2012. HMHI will name the donation center in her honor on June 17.

We’re hosting an open house at our Humility of Mary Housing, Inc. offices at 3805 Mississippi Avenue here in Davenport. This special event takes place on June 17 from 4:30 to 7 pm. We’ll begin with a ribbon cutting ceremony at 4:30 with the Quad Cities Chamber of Commerce to dedicate the Fresh Start Donation Center in honor of Gertrude

Twenty-five years ago, Gertrude began holding a benefit sale in the garage of her family home. The proceeds of all her work and sales went to support the HMHI program. That early vision has grown and expanded into a 12,800 sq. ft donation center that’s open year round. Donations received there support HMHI’s participant families. The Fresh Start Donation Center also hosts two benefit sales each year, in the spring and in the fall.

Gertrude Vogel celebrates her 95th birthday this summer. Still an active volunteer at HMHI, she shows how one person can change the lives of many.

Our HMHI donation center receives food, clothing, furniture and accessories that help support and rebuild the lives of single parent families that have been homeless. The HMHI two-year program allows them the opportunity to live in a furnished apartment, while focusing on finishing their education or job training, stabilizing their employment, learning financial responsibility and strengthening the bond with their children. In addition, each participant has a case worker to guide them on their journey to lead independent, self-sufficient lives.

Humility of Mary Housing, Inc. was founded in 1990 by Sisters of the Congregation of Humility of Mary. Completing its 25th year, HMHI has served 780 families including 1,543 children.

HMHI’s Family Night at the Family Museum engages the entire family in an evening of fun and treats that will help Quad City families experiencing homelessness. The newly renovated Family Museum in Bettendorf will open its doors for a special Friday evening session on June 12 from 5:30-7:30 PM. The evening offers participants many special opportunities. Admission is $5 for individuals and $20 for families. Members of the Family Museum attend free. Proceeds benefit Humility of Mary Housing’s housing program that serves homeless families.

Each admission includes access to the Family Museum’s newly renovated exhibits. In addition, the evening of June 12 will offer the first opportunity for the Quad City public to enjoy the Rainforest Adventure, a new traveling summer exhibit [download pdf] or visit the museum’s webpage to learn more about it. There will be a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate its opening. Complementary hot dogs, chips, beverage and cookie is included in each admission, so families can enjoy an informal meal during their evening out.

In addition to the interactive exhibits at the museum, the Family Museum will provide special children’s activity tables that evening. In addition, participants will enjoy the balloon art personally created for them by Karen Habernicht. And attendees will also enjoy complementary access to the services of Cari Cooney of QC Painted Faces. It promises the public an evening full of fun, activity and enjoyment.

Board announces new executive director

The board of directors of Humility of Mary Housing, Inc. (HMHI) has announced that Emily Harvey, LMSW, will serve as the agency’s new executive director. Because this position is a post in shared administration with Humility of Mary Shelter, Inc. (HMSI), Harvey will also assume the executive director position in that agency as well. Her position will begin on June 1, 2015.

Ms. Harvey, who has been director of social services for The Salvation Army of the Quad Cities will, in coordination with the boards of HMHI and HMSI, be responsible for the provision of support services to persons who are homeless or at risk of homelessness in the Quad Cities and its surrounding areas, in conformity with the mission of each organization.

Sister Johanna Rickl, CHM, a member of the internal search committee, commented on the board’s choice:

“Emily brings a wonderful background of education and experience. With that, plus her passion for our mission,  we are confident that she will work effectively with our fine staff and be a positive addition to  both agencies.”

Before joining HMSI and HMHI, Ms. Harvey was director of social services for The Salvation Army of the Quad Cities, managing many aspects of the non-profit agency, including the Emergency Shelter Program, Transitional Housing Program and Emergency Disaster Services Programs. She has worked with HUD funding regulations, fair housing requirements, Housing First initiatives and other executive level management areas.

She is also adjunct faculty at St. Ambrose University school of social work teaching social welfare policy classes to graduate level students.

Ms. Harvey has a master’s degree in social work from St. Ambrose University, a bachelor’s degree in women and gender studies from Washington University in St. Louis, and an associate’s degree in liberal arts from Marshalltown Community College.

Shoppers purchased a record amount of merchandise at our Fresh Start Spring Sale.

We’re still crunching numbers, but thanks to all of you we are on a record pace as we total the numbers from our Fresh Start Benefit Sale 2015! Your support and patronage allow us to lift up and empower single parents who are on the path to lead a self-sufficient, productive life for themselves and their children.

Thanks to our generous donors, we had lots of merchandise to offer the public. It’s believed that this was our largest sale since we moved the Fresh Start Sale from its venue at the fairgrounds to our own office warehouse area.

Volunteers at HMHI logged 364.75 total hours of contributed assistance from March 20 through the end of the sale on Saturday. We could not handle an event of this magnitude without all that loyal support. Many of our volunteers work year after year, and all year around, to help us prepare for our seasonal sales. Our part-time workers through the AARP work program, coupled with full-time volunteers, contributed 143 hours during the sale week.

We also appreciate HyVee on East Kimberly for loaning us shopping carts and baskets for our Fresh Start patrons’ use. Our neighbors, Colonial Dental Studio and Jeanelle at Davenport Guns, were generous with their parking spaces for shoppers’ cars!

We appreciate everyone who helps us provide programming to families experiencing homelessness in the Quad Cities. This sale gives a second chance to merchandise that’s no longer needed. And the benefits of the sale give a fresh start to families in need. It’s a win-win for the Quad Cities. And, we appreciate everyone who makes it possible.

The items we sold were donated over the last six months. Limits of space and time prevent us from retaining everything that’s donated until our program participants can utilize them. The sale allows us turn those assets into dollars that purchase goods and services needed to help our participant families. And, our donors appreciate that we’re employing Best Use Practices, deriving greatest value from their contributions.

Hope we’ll see you again in the fall! Our Fall Fresh Start Sale is September 24-25. We’re happy to receive your gently used, quality donations to help our program continue to assist families experiencing homeless in our community. Bring them to our office during our business hours. Fresh Start Sale for Spring 2015! April 24 & 25, 8am to 4pm

The spring sale that you love is approaching! This spring’s Fresh Start Benefit Sale features many new items and also good used items. These include furniture, household items, bedding, toys, books, dishes, jewelry, collectibles, antiques, gift items, craft and hobby supplies, clothing, small electrical appliances and LOTS of miscellaneous. Our sale fills an entire hall, and our prices are marked to send the merchandise flying out the doors. Each item on the sale has been individually inspected and cleared by our quality control team.

The sale is held indoors at our donation center at 3805 Mississippi Ave. in Davenport, IA. Rain or shine, you’ll shop in comfort. Count on our friendly volunteers; we’ll assist you.

Donations are still most welcome and can be dropped off at our office and donation center at 3805 Mississippi Avenue, Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. through April 17. We ask that all items be clean and in working order.

Proceeds from the Fresh Start Benefit Sale will support programming and services for Quad Cities community families that are experiencing homelessness. Our program served 140 children and their 73 parents during our last year of operations. Because we serve two generations, we know that we’re breaking the cycle of homelessness for future residents of the QCA.
